Conclusion of the Fifth Environmental Camp at Lajee Center – Promoting Environmental Awareness and Connection to the Land

Lajee Center in Aida Refugee Camp concluded the activities of the Fifth Environmental Camp, implemented through the Health and Environment Unit, with the participation of 45 boys and girls aged 12 to 16. The camp was part of an integrated program designed to enhance environmental awareness, strengthen the participants’ connection to the land, and promote Palestinian environmental identity through a series of educational, awareness-raising, artistic, and field-based activities.

The program included presentations and discussions on the environment and Palestinian identity, as well as the impact of the Israeli occupation on the environment in Palestine. Participants engaged in practical workshops on paper and plastic recycling, in addition to artistic and creative activities that allowed them to express their understanding of Palestinian nature in imaginative ways. A field trip to Wadi Al-Makhrour and the historic village of Battir was also organized to introduce participants to the beauty and diversity of Palestinian landscapes and to emphasize the importance of protecting lands from confiscation and settlement expansion.

The camp concluded with a set of final activities, including an environmental competition and the distribution of flower seedlings to participants for planting at home, as a way to promote a culture of green living and environmental sustainability. A recreational trip to Husan Resort was also organized, marking a joyful end to days filled with learning, engagement, and teamwork.

Through this initiative, Lajee Center reaffirms its commitment to empowering youth environmentally and intellectually, fostering a sense of responsibility and belonging to the land, and emphasizing that environmental awareness is a core part of the Palestinian national identity. Protecting the environment remains one of the everyday forms of resilience and resistance in the face of ongoing environmental and political challenges.
