Mousa and the ACLAI Palestine Gym
In 2018, Mousa had a stroke that changed his whole life. He went from being a person who ran marathons and worked as an Aluminium technician in his small basement, to being unable to move his right arm and leg. He needed a wheelchair to be able to transfer from one place to another. Mousa spent 45 days in bed after the stroke. After a rehab process lasting three months, he was able to walk with 3-points cane, yet was unable to move his right hand.
In 2022, Mousa joined our gym program, with a long-term goal of once again being able to run marathons. He started thinking about his lifestyle and all the things he wanted change. Before beginning at ACLAI Gym, it would take Mousa 35 mins to walk from his home at Al Azza Refugee Camp to Aida Refugee Camp where our gym is located. Through consistent training, Mousa is now able to walk from Al Azza Camp to Aida Camp in 10 minutes.
After just four months of starting the rehab process with ACLAI Palestine Gym, he is able to use the 1-point cane.
He can also now grip things with his effected hand and, after four years of not being able to go in the water, Mousa has tried swimming again. Significantly for Mousa, he can now to climb up and down the stairs in his home without stopping.
Our occupational therapist and coach in the ACLAI Palestine Gym said, “Mousa has been the first person with physical dysfunction to use the gym, and he helped us in the gym to create and build the community rehabilitation process for the people who have physical dysfunction. He inspired the team and the people around to work more and that nothing is impossible to achieve, even after years of the disability.”
