Lajee Provides Free Medical Care to Nearly 100 People
People who attended received a number in order to protect their privacy. Patients waiting to be seen sat in Lajee’s community hall and heard a lecture from Dr. Mohammed Abu Srour about the importance of vaccinations for children. Throughout the event, which ran from 9am to 2pm, Lajee staff called patients for their turn to see the doctors they had requested. The children were seen by the family doctors as well as the eye doctor.
Dr. Mohammed said that the goal of the medical day was to give the community what they need and to cover the needs in the camp, specifically with the CHW patients. “It was a good turnout and people received good benefits,” he said. “We will continue and in the future host a day to focus on additional health topics.”
The aim of the day was to focus on the patients of the community health program who do not normally have access to these specialists. The CHW team used the opportunity to also provide the broader community with the opportunity to check on their health. People who participated commented on the patience the CHWs have with patients, and the way they treat each person with respect and dignity.
Community Health Work Coordinator, Aya Darwish, said about the day, “I feel good about what we do for our community. We are healthy and happy if our community is feeling the same – especially because the community is our family.”
Patient Appreciation Activity
On February 9, 2023, the community health team hosted a short activity in the center to show appreciation for the patients who have been participating in the program. Dr. Henry gave the group a lecture about the differences between viruses and bacteria. Afterwards, patients were given gift baskets that included a scarf and boxes of herbs for women and hats and shaving cream for men, as well as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and deodorant for everyone. Each gift had a small card with the name of the patient and a message that said “thank you for trusting us” from the Community Health Workers.
